UIC set a new record for freshman class size, with 4,244 first-time freshmen enrolled in fall 2022, following a 2021 enrollment of 4,202 students. This robust enrollment growth can partially be credited to the new Illinois Commitment program, which was announced in August 2018. Illinois Commitment is a financial aid program that guarantees free tuition and fees to any admitted student who is an Illinois resident with an annual family income of $67,100 or less and has less than $50,000 in family assets. First generation students in fall 2021 more than doubled from ten years ago.
Overall, the University of Illinois System grew to a record high for an eighth consecutive year, increasing 5.0% annually to more than 94,000 students in fall 2021. The system surpassed its five-year goal of 93,600 students by 2022, which bodes well for future UIC enrollment, as it's the system's largest and most prestigious campus.
The University of Illinois Chicago does not require students to live on campus. The university offers 8 residence halls located throughout the campus.
